Abstract

Kenikir plant (Cosmos caudatus Kunth.) has long been known as the traditional medicine. Kenikir leaves contains flavonoid, saponin, alkaloid, and tannin. This research is conducted to determine the antibacterial activity of the fraction of n-hexane, ethyl acetate and water from kenikir leaves ethanol extract to Salmonella typhi ATCC 13311. Kenikir leaves powder is extracted using maceration method with 70% ethanol solvent then fractioned using n-hexane solvent, ethyl acetate and water. The result of the extraction and fraction is then used in antibacterial activity test of Salmonella typhi ATCC 13311 using diffusion and dilution method. Diffusion method is accomplished to know the resistivity and the most active fraction to Salmonella typhi ATCC 13311 using the concentration of 50%; 25% and 12,5%. Dilution method is conducted to know the minimum concentration of killing ability from the most active fraction using the serial concentration of 50%; 25%; 12,5%; 6,25%; 3,125%; 1,563%; 0,781%; 0,391%; 0, 196% and 0,098%. ANOVA oneway is used in statistic analysis to determine whether there is a significant difference between the test preparation or not. The result of the analysis shows that all the fractions and extract have antibacterial activity. Ethyl acetate fraction is the most active fraction with 24,00 mm of resistivity diameter in the concentration of 50%; 24,67 mm in the concentration of 25% and 20,00 mm in the concentration of 12,5%. The dilution test result of ethyl acetate shows antibacterial activity with MBC of 6,25%. Keyword : Cosmos caudatus Kunth., Salmonella typhi ATCC 13311, antibacterial, fraction.
