Abstract

Salmonella typhi is the cause of typhoid fever, humans are the only host for infection caused by itself. The infection occurs by faecal-oral transmission from contaminated food and drink. Inappropriate use of antibiotics can cause resistance in the treatment of S. typhi infections. This study aims to know antibacterial activity of essential oil of bangle and red galangal to S. thypi bacteria. Selection S. typhi as test bacteria due to the high prevalence of typhoid fever in Indonesia. Antibacterial activity test used disk diffusion method with concentration of 50%, 25% dan 12,5% and their comparisons of 1:1; 1:3; 3:1 and diluted with concentration of serial dilution of 50%, 25%, 12.5%, 6.25%, 3.125%, 1.56%, and 0.78%. Essential oil of bangle and red galangal were obtained by steam-water distillation. The physical constants are carried out by testing the specific gravity, organoleptic, identification and refractive index of essential oil. The parameters used were to know the inhibition zone diameter in diffusion test and Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) on dilution test. The rendement of bangle and red galanga were obtained 0,2% and 0.057%. Based on the result test, diffusion test showed that their comparisons of combination 1:1, 1:3, 3:1 had each inhibition diameter zone of 11 mm, 12.60 mm, 10 mm. On diffusion test, their MIC and MBC were obtained concentration at 1,56% and 3,125%. So, can be concluded that the highest antimicrobial potential is their comparisons of combination 1:3 with inhibition diameter xone of 12.60 mm.
