Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disease characterized by high blood sugar levels (hyperglycemia) caused by impaired insulin secretion, and insulin resistance or both. The purpose of this study was to determine the antidiabetic activity ethanol extract of herba kitolod, to know the effective dose of kitolod herbal ethanol extract, and increasing the size and density of the islet and decreasing the percentage of endemic necrosis of Langerhans islet cells in pancreatic organs. The research used 6 groups of Wistar male rats, The first group as a normal control; the second group as a control group of diabetic (alloxan); the third as a comparison group (glibenclamide); the fourth, fifth and sixth group as test groups extract ethanool herba kitolod at a dose of 50 mg/kg BW, 100 mg/kg BW and 200 mg/kg BW. Test preparations were administered orally for 14 days, then measured blood glucose levels in rate using the glucose oxidase (GOD-PAP) method and pancreatic organ histopathology with Hematoxylin-Eosin staining. The results showed that herbal ethanol extract kitolod can lower blood sugar levels of mice. The most effective dose of kitolod herbal ethanol extract is 200mg / kg BW of rat and pancreatic histopathology observed based on damage data expressed in pycnosis, karioreksis, kariolisis at dose 200 mg / kg BW showed no significant difference with control group a comparator which means that the hollow ethanol extract of kitolod has the same effect as the comparison group.
