Abstract

On pathologic circumstance such as diabetes, the increase of oxidative stress in body will decrease of endogenous activity so the body unable to arrest free radical and prevent cell damage. One of natural antioxidants source as antidiabetes is red gedi leaf (Abelmochus manihot L.Medik ). The objective of this study was to investigate the activity of the liver in streptozotocin-nicotinamid-induced rats. The study used STZ-NA-induced male wistar rats at the single dose of STZ 45 mg/kg BW and NA 110 mg/kg BW intraperitonially. A total of 30 rats divide into 6 groups, considered 5 rats each. Group I: normal control, group II: negative control, group III: positive control with glibenclamide, group IV, V and VI were treatment group administered by ethanolic extract of gedi merah leaf at the dose of 100 mg/kg BW, 200 mg/kg BW and 400 mg/kg BW. Mice indicated DM for 15 after induced STZ-NA and treated with oral extract once daily for 14 days. Parameters observed were elevated SOD levels and histopathologic images of rat liver. Data analysis using ANOVA method followed by LSD post hoc test. The results showed that ethanolic extract of gedi merah leaf at the doses of 100 mg/kg BW, 200 mg/kg BW and 400 mg/kg BW could increase of SOD levels and remedy the liver rat histopathology. The most effective dose in increase of SOD levels of rat was dose of 400 mg/kg BW and each dose had the same ability to improve histopathologic images of rat liver.
