Abstract

Diabetes mellitus therapy is a long term therapy because blood glucose levels must be controlled to prevent the occurrence of disease complications. Sambung nyawa (Gynura procumbens leaves) is a plant that can be used as an alternative antidiabetic drug. This study aimed to determine the effect of ethanol extract of G. procumbens in lowering blood glucose levels in white male mice. G. procumbens powder macerated with 96% ethanol. Test animal were divided 5 groups, each 6 mice. Group were given a negative control group (CMC 0,5%) and Group II as positive control (Glibenclamide dose of 0,013 mg/20gBB), group III, IV, V give successive doses of 100 mg/kgBB; 200 mg/kgBB; 300 mg/kgBB. All groups after 16 hours of acclimatization alloxan induced by intra-peritonial. Examination of blood glucose levels performed on day 3th,7th, and 14th. The analysis data using oneway anova test (p<0,05). The research showed that difference in blood glucose decrease levels on day 14th (8,66 ± 7,47 mg/dL); positive control (63,6 ± 25,4 mg/dL); ethanol extract of G. procumbens dose of 100 mg/kg body weight (64,5 ± 45,4 mg/dL); ethanol extract of G. procumbens dose of 200 mg/kgBW (74,3 ± 16,8 mg/dL); ethanol extract of G.procumbens dose of 300mg/kgBW (110 ± 23,4 mg/dL). From the result of statistical analysis of the ethanol extract of G. procumbens 100 mg/kgBW; 200 mg/kgBW; 300 mg/kgBW and there is’n difference significant. At a dose of 100 mg/kgBW and 200 mg/kgBW has antidiabetic effects as the most effective in lowering blood sugar levels in alloxan-induced mice.
