Abstract

Faloak bark (Sterculia quadrifida R.Br) is the part of faloak tree which has antidiabetic activity. The purpose of this study is to know the antidiabetic effect of ethanolic extract of faloak bark in increasing the number of islands and decreasing the percentage of necrosis endocrine cells of Langerhans Island in pancreatic organ of male rats that induced by aloxxan. Ethanolic extract of faloak bark was tested for activity by administration of alloxan-induced rats. The treatment group were divided into 6 groups: normal control, negative control, positive control, ethanol extract of faloak bark dose 65 mg/kg BB, ethanol extract of faloak bark dose 130 mg/kg BB and ethanol extract of faloak bark dose 260 mg/kg BB. The treatment was given for 14 days and on the 15th day of the test, the rats were sacrificed and the pancreas was prepared by histology. The data obtained were analyzed using Kolmogorof-Smirnov method and continued with One Way Anova. The result of this study showed that the ethanolic extract of faloak bark dose of 260 mg/kg BB have the best activity in increasing the island number and decreasing the percentage of necrosis endocrine cell of Langerhans island and had significant difference (p<0,05) with diabetes control group. Key words : ethanolic extract, faloak bark, Langerhans island, pancreas necrosis
