Abstract

Bawang dayak bulbs (Eleutherine palmifolia (L) Merr.) is a plant that has the effect of the decreased levels of antioxidants, especially MDA. MDA (malondiladehyde) is a compound dialdehid and the end product of lipid peroxides. The purpose of this research is to determine the effective dose of ethanol extract of bawang dayak bulbs to reduce levels of MDA on paracetamol-induced rat liver. The study used 30 male rats were divided into 6 groups. Measurement of MDA conducted on day 15 of treatment. The treatment group was divided into 6 groups: I normal group, II negative group (Na CMC), III positive group (Curcuma® 18 mg/kg bb), IV dose group (ethanol extract of bawang dayak bulbs 40.5 mg/kg bb), V dose group (ethanol extract of bawang dayak bulbs 81 mg/kg bb) and VI dose group (ethanol extract of bawang dayak bulbs 162 mg/kg bb). Induction of reactive metabolites used paracetamol 2.5g/kg bb rat orally at day 14 of treatment. Data levels of MDA were tested to determine the Shapiro-Wilk normality of the data, and then analyzed by One Way Anova followed Tukey HSD test. The results showed that ethanol extract of bawang dayak bulbs can reduce levels of MDA on paracetamol-induced rat liver. Dose ethanol extract of bawang dayak bulbs most effective in reduce levels of MDA on paracetamol-induce rat liver was 162 mg/kg bb (0.53nmol/g) which proved to reduce in levels of MDA better than dose of 40.5mg/kg bb (1.09 nmol/g) and 81 mg/kg bb (0.71 nmol/g).
