Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disease that has a serious impact on the health, quality and life expectancy of the patient. Pepino fruit (Solanum muricatum Aiton) is one of the plants believed to lower blood glucose levels. The purpose of this research is to know the activity of pepino ethanol extract on decreasing blood glucose level in male white rat induced with alloxan. The pepino fruit (Solanum muricatum Aiton) was extracted by the maceration method using 70% ethanol solvent. Tests of antihyperglycemia activity were performed on 30 male Wistar rats induced by alloxan single dose of 150 mg/kg BB intraperitoneally. The test animals were divided into 6 groups, normal control, negative control of CMC Na, glibenclamide positive control, pepino ethanol extract at doses of 16,2 mg/kg BB, 32,4 mg/kg BB and 64,8 mg/kg BB. Treatment was given for 21 days. The effect of hyperglycemia was evaluated using the parameter of decreasing fasting blood glucose. The effect of hyperglycemia was evaluated using the GOD-PAP method with the parameter of decreased blood glucose levels. Data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA, followed by Tukey HSD average test. The results of this study showed that ethanol extract of pepino dose 16,2 mg/kg BB, 32,4 mg/kg BB, and 64,8 mg/kg BB could decrease blood sugar level induced by alloxan. The dose that can lower blood glucose levels is the highest dose of 64,8 mg/kg BB. Keywords: antihiperglikemia, pepino ethanol extract, alloxan
