Abstract

Okra fruit is a natural ingredient that is empirically used for the treatment of diabetes mellitus. This study was conducted to determine the antihyperglycemic activity of okra ethanol extract. It has been tested antihyperglycemic activity by alloxan induction method in male white rat. The experimental study was conducted for 12 days using 25 rats and divided into 5 groups: negative control group using CMC, posistive control group using glibenclamide, and ethanol extract of okra dose 50 mg / kgBW, dose 100mg / kgBW and 200mg / kgBW. Glucose levels were measured at T0, T1, T2, T3, T4 and T5 using glucometer test strips. Data were analyzed with one-way ANOVA followed by Tukey HSD test. showing at all doses showed a difference to negative controls. Dose 50 mg/kgBW has the effect of lowering glucose levels but not comparable with positive controls. Dose 200 mg/kgBW has the effect of lowering glucose levels but causing hypoglycemic symptoms. Can be concluded okra ethanol extract can decrease blood glucose level and effective dose of extract okra fruit in lowering blood glucose level is 100 mg / kgBW.
