Abstract

Areca catechu L is an Arecaceae / palmae plant that can be found around us and can be used as a traditional medicine. Chemical content of betel nuts are flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins, and tannins. The research aim to determined the activity of ethanol extract, fraction of n-hexane, ethyl acetate and water from Areca catechu L as antibacterial to Klebsiella pneunimiae ATCC 10031. Antibacterial activity test of ethanol extract, n-hexane fraction, ethyl acetate fraction and water fraction again Klebsiella pneunomiae ATCC 10031 used dilution and diffusion method. The fraction concentration used in the diffusion method is 50%; 25%; 12.5%. The most active fraction obtained was the ethyl acetate fraction used for dilution method with concentration of 50%; 25%; 12.5%; 6.25%; 3.12%; 1.56%; 0.78%; 0.39%; 0.19%; 0.09%. The most active fractions were tested for chemical content by Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC). The result of the research by diffusion method showed that ethyl acetate fraction is the most actived fraction with 24 mm inhibitory diameter at 25% concentration. The concentration of Minimum Kill (KBM) activity of antibacterial fraction of actived ethyl acetate to Klebsiella pneunomiae ATCC 10031 is 6,25%. The identification result of TLC indicates ethyl acetate fraction contained flavonoid and saponin compound. Keywords: betel nut, dilution method, diffusion method, Klebsiella pneunomiae ATCC 1003
