Abstract
Porang (Amorphophallus muelleri Blume) tuber is a class of araceae growing wild in the forests of Java. Nowadays, the flour of porang tuber usually consume as the addition of pregnant women’s cereal. The purpose of this study is to find out the teratogenic effects on fetal death and bone structure defect. Porang flour purification was done by using 60% solvent. The variation ratio of porang flour and ethanol was 1g:15ml for 30 minutes with a hotplate stirrer and magnetic stirrer. Porang flour induction was tested on 84 pregnant mice in three doses. Dose I was 200 mg/kg of weight, dose II was 1000 mg/kg of weight, dose III was 2000 mg/kg of weight, while the control doses were given distilled water. After the examination of death fetus was done, the Alizarin Reds 0,1% staining technique was performed for disability checks on bone strcture. Fetus death and defect data were analyzed by using Mann-Whitney analysis. The results of porang flour teratogenic test on induction dose I was 200 mg/kg of weight, dose II was 1000 mg/kg of weight, dose III was 2000 mg/kg of weight showed effects of fetal death and bone strcture defect on mice at all doses tested. The bone strcture defect consist of incomplete ribs, swallen ribs, bent ribs, branched ribs, conjoined ribs, skull, tail bone, neck bone, spine, stunted bone, and brittle bones.
