Abstract

Mangosteen is one of the medicinal plants which has been proven to have antioxidant activity. The aim of this study was to know various concentration effect of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and hydroxy propyl methyl cellulose (HPMC) to the physical properties of the peel-off gel mask preparation, as well as to fine out the antioxidant activity of the extract and mask gel mangosteen extract. Mangosteen leaves were extracted by maceration method using ethanol 50%. The mangosteen leaf extract then was made preparations peel-off gel mask with the percentage of extract 1% and the various concentration of PVA and HPMC as the following formula I (15: 1), formula II (10: 2), formula III (15: 3), formula IV (10: 3), formula V (15: 2). Fifth formula was observed the physical properties including organoleptic, viscosity, dispersive power, drying time, pH, and tested the antioxidant activity with the DPPH method. The results showed that PVA increased concentration affected the drying time (more quickly) and pH (acid), while the increase in the concentration of HPMC affected on dispersive power (getting smaler) and viscosity (getting bigger) so antioxidant activity (getting low). IC50 values of the extracts, the formula I, II, III, IV and V respectively, were 58.694; 193.36; 163.519; 225.242; 186.583; 211.211 ppm. The best result of physical properties test and antioxidant activity test showed at formula II with a variety of PVA and HPMC (10:2). Keywords: mangosteen leaf extract, peel-off gel mask, PVA, HPMC
