Abstract

Verapamil HCl is Chalcium Chanel blocker (CCB) it used to treathypertension. Verapamil HCl has a bioavailability of 20% and half-life of 2-7 hours so that it can be made preparations gastroretentive to improve the bioavailability and prolong the drug release. The research aims to study influence of sodium bicarbonate and pectin on floatation behavior and swelling, and drug release of verapamil HCl floating tablet. The research is using four variation of concentration sodium bicarbonate and pectin by direct compression method and it was evaluated for physical properties of powder and tablet, and drug release. The influence of concentration sodium bicarbonate and pectin on floatation behavior and swelling, and drug release was determined by sofware Design Expert®. Pectin can decreasing floating lag time and drug release, and can increasing floating time and swelling. Sodium bicarbonate can increasing floating lag time, floating time and swelling, and can decreasing drug release. Combination of sodium bicarbonat and pectin can increasing floating lag time, swelling and decreasing floating time and drug release. Sodium bicarbonate (60 mg) and pectin (150 mg) having fast floating lag time, a long floating time and the swelling greatest, and follow zero order.
