Abstract

Mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana L.) leaves contains chemical compounds flavonoids and tannins could be expected to reduce total cholesterol and triglycerides. This study aimed to determine the effect of ethanolic extract of mangosteen leaves to total cholesterol and triglycerides in male rats, and determine the most effective dose lower total cholesterol and triglycerides. This study used 30 male rats were divided into six groups each consisting of 5 rat. Normal control group I , group II positive group with administration of simvastatin suspension. Group III negative control. The treatment group was given the leaf extract of mangosteen at a dose of 87.5 mg / kg ; 175 mg / kg ; 350 mg / kg . Mice were given fatty beef and quail egg yolk except the normal group for two weeks . Total cholesterol and triglycerides were determined by the method CHOD - PAP and GPO - PAP The results of this study indicated that ethanolic leaf extract of mangosteen with the third dose of 350 mg/ kg in rat have an activity to lower total cholesterol and triglycerides Keywords : mangosteen leaves , total cholesterol , triglycerides
