Abstract

Mahogany leaves (Swietenia macrophylla King) has in vitro antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and contains flavonoids, alkaloids, terpenoids, saponins, and tannins, that able to heal infections especially by Staphylococcus aureus. The aim of the study was to find out the ability of mahogany leaves ethanol extract cream in healing infection caused by Staphylococcus aureus and to know the effective concentration in healing the infection. The extraction was done by maceration method using ethanol 70%. Formulas of mahogany leaves extract cream were made in three concentrations i.e. 0.5%, 1%, and 2%. Parameter mahogany leaves extract cream observed was concentration and storage time for 4 weeks. Observation of healing time was done by observing the length of healing infections on the back skin of rabbits after administration of mahogany leaves extract cream, characterized by the loss of erythema, edema and puss. The obtained data was analyzed using one way Anova (significance p<0.05). The result of the study showed that mahogany leaves extract cream had the effectiveness in healing Staphylococcus aureus bacterial infection. Mahogany leaves extract cream in concentration of 2% had the most effective antibacterial activity.
