Abstract

Hypercholesterolemia is a condition where an increase in cholesterol levels in the blood, increased cholesterol levels will be accompanied by elevated levels of LDL in the blood which can lead to various diseases such as coronary heart disease and stroke. Fish oil is known to have many benefits due to the content of unsaturated fatty acids, including cholesterol-lowering. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of tilapia fish oil (Oreochromis nilotikus) on levels of LDL and HDL and also the dose is effective in lowering LDL levels and increasing HDL levels in mice with hyperlipidemia. Thirty mice were divided into 6 groups. Group 1 (normal control) without treatment, group II (negative control) were given PGA 0.5%, Group III (positive control) were given doses of simvastatin 0,36/200gBW, group IV, V and VI were given a dose of 0.8 ml fish oil treatment; 1.6 ml ; and 3.2 ml / 200gBW. Mice were treated for 21 days with a span of days 0 before treatment, the 14th day after the administration of high-fat diet and the 21st day after the administration of doses of fish oil, blood samples were taken through a vein eyes, levels of LDL and HDL were tested by ANOVA continued Post Hoc test. The results showed tilapia fish oil at dose of 3.2 ml / 200gBW effected on HDL and LDL cholesterol levels in rats with hyperlipidemia but was less effective if compared with simvastatin positive control where the percentage increasing or decline was no more than 50%.
