Abstract

The leave of taro (Colocasia esculenta [L.] Schott) is a plant that is used empirically as a cure wounds. Taro leaf chemical constituents are alkaloids, saponins, tannins, flavonoids and terpenoids. This study was conducted to determine the activity of the ethanol extract, fraction of n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and water from the leaves of taro (Colocasia esculenta [L.] Schott) as antibacterial against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923. Taro leaf extraction using maceration method with 96% ethanol, and then fractionated using a solvent n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and water. Extraction and fractionation test antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 using dilution method. The concentration of ethanol extract and fractions used were 40%; 20%; 10%; 5%; 2,5%; 1,25%; 0,625%; 0,313%; 0,156%; 0,078%. The results of this study showed that the ethanol extract, fraction of nhexane, ethyl acetate and water has antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 with Minimum Kill Concentration respectively 20%, 40%, 10% and 20%. Ethyl acetate fraction of taro leaf has the most active antibacterial activity than the fraction of n-hexane, water and extract.
