Abstract

Sweet potato leaves (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam) contains chemical compounds such as flavonoids, quercetin and polyphenols that suspected can lower cholesterol levels. This study aimed to determine the effect of ethanolic extract of leaves of sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam) on total cholesterol levels in male rats and to determine dose ethanolic extract of sweet potato leaves (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam) which most effectively lowers total cholesterol levels in white male rats. This study was conducted 30 white male rats. They were divided into 6 groups, each group consist of 5 rat. Group I is a normal control. Group II is a negative control. Group III is a positive control group by administering simvastatin suspense. The treatment groups were given sweet potato leaves extract to rats in dose of 70 mg / 200gBB; 140 mg / 200gBB; 280 mg / 200gBB. Respectively rats given the lard and quail egg yolk for two weeks until the situation hiperlepidemia, then treated orally with ethanolic extract up to 21 days. Total cholesterol levels are determined using method CHOD-PAP. The results showed the ethanol extract of sweet potato leaves (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam) in dose of 140 mg / 200 g BW on mice have the most effective activity to lower total cholesterol blood serum white male rats and did not different significantly with simvastatin group.
