Abstract

Angsana (Pterocarpus indicus Willd.) is one of plant that has many used to cure various desease such dysentery, mouth ulcer and boil. The stem bark of angsana contains alkaloid, phenol, flavonoid, saponin, sterol, tannin and triterpenoid compounds. It has a considerable potential to be used as Shigella dysenteriae antibacterial. The aim of the research was to know the MKC (Minimum Kill Concentration) of the most active fraction of angsana stem barks as antibacterial against Shigella dysenteriae. Angsana stem bark was extracted by maceration method using ethanol 70%. The obtained extract was fractionated by n-hexane, ethyl acetate and water as solvents. Each fraction and extract was divided into three concentrations (50%, 25% and 12,5%) and be the sample for antibacterial activity testing by diffusion method, to determine the most active fraction. The most active fraction was continued dilution method used concentrations of 50%; 25%; 12,5%; 6,25%; 3,125%; 1,563%; 0,781%; 0,391%; 0,195% and 0,098%. The result shows that n-hexane, ethyl acetate and water fractions of ethanol extract of angsana stem bark has antibacterial activity against Shigella dysenteriae. The water fraction was the most active fraction as antibacterial against Shigella dysenteriae with MKC value of 6,25% w/v.
