Abstract
The high-fat diet habits and lack of exercise increase the produce of free radicals that affect cell damage and lead the degenerative diseases as well as the increasing of total cholesterol levels (hypercholesterolemia). Cinnamon Barks (Cinnamomum burmanni Nees ex Bl.) and papaya leaves (Carica papaya L.) contain flavonoids, saponins, and tannins. Flavonoids and saponins able to decrease the total cholesterol levels and prevents the oxidation of cholesterol in the body. The study aims to determine the effectiveness of a combination of cinnamon barks extract and papaya leaves extract in decreasing the total cholesterol levels in the rats blood and to compare the effectiveness between the single extract and the combination extract. This study used 35 rats that were divided into 7 groups: negative control (CMC 0.5%), positive control (simvastatin), cinnamon barks extract (0,075g / 200g BB), papaya leaves extract (0,750g / 200g BB), combination I (0,057g / 200g BB : 0,188g / 200g BB), combination II (0,038g / 200g BB : 0,375g / 200g BB), the combination III (0,019g / 200g BB : 0,563g/ 200g BB). The decreasing levels of total cholesterol were measured at the 1st day, 14th day, 21st day, and the 28th day. This study results that the combination of cinnamon barks extract and papaya leaves extract can decrease the total cholesterol levels in the blood serum of rats. The most effective combination dose is combination III (0,019g / 200g BB : 0,563g/ 200g BB). Combination III has the similar activity with the papaya leaves extract and simvastatin. Keywords: total cholesterol, cinnamon barks (Cinnamomum burmanni Nees ex Bl.) and papaya leaves (Carica papaya L.).
