Abstract

Jambolana leaf (Syzygium cumini L.) contains flavonoid, tannin. Jambolana leaf empirically used as an antidiarrheal. The objective of this research is to find out the activity of etanolic extract, n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and water fractions of jambolana leaf (Syzygium cumini L.) as antibacterial agent to Shigella dysenteriae ATCC 9361 The jambolana leaf powder was maceration using ethanol 96%, that was then concentrated, followed with fractionation using n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and water solvent. The method employed in this research was dilution, method of antibacterial test was conducted by dilution method a series of dilutions in various concentrations 409,6 mg/ml; 204,8 mg/ml; 102,4 mg/ml; 51,2 mg/ml; 25,6 mg/ml; 12,8 mg/ml; 6,4 mg/ml; 3,2 mg/ml; 1,6 mg/ml; dan 0,8 mg/ml. Observation of bacterial’s growth is after incubation at 37ºC for 18-24 hours. The result of research showed that water fraction of jambolana leaf has the most effective antibacterial activity compared with the etanolic extract, n-hexane, and ethyl acetate fractions. Water fraction has Minimum Killing Concentration of 102,4 mg/ml, n-hexane has no Minimum Killing Concentration, ethyl acetate has Minimum Killing Concentration of 204,8 mg/ml, and etanolic extract has Minimum Killing Concentration of 204,8 mg/ml on Shigella dysenteriae ATCC 9361.
