Abstract

Sweet star fruit (Averrhoa carambola Linn.) can be used as diuretic agent. This research aimed to find out the diuretic activity and its effect on sodium excretion of sweet star fruit extract to Wistar male rats. The method that used in this research was infundation and freeze drying. The tested animal used consisted of 30 rats, divided into 6 treatment groups: normal control, furosemide pisitive control 0,36 mg/200 g BW, negative control CMC 0,5%, sweet star fruit extract 144 mg/200 g BW, sweet star fruit DE 288 mg/200 g BW, and sweet star fruit 576 mg/200 g BW. Measurement and storage of urine was done every hour for 5 hours, then continued at 24 hours. Diuretic effect was obtained by calculating the cumulative urine volume and AUC (Area Under the Curve). The amount of sodium in the urine was obtained by calculating 24-hour urine volume and sodium content of the AAS (Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry) result. Data was processed using one-way variance analysis followed by Tukey HSD test. The result showed that the extracts of sweet star fruit dose 288 mg/200 g BW could provide a diuretic effect, but did not affect sodium excretion in the urine.
