Abstract

Kepuh Seed (Sterculia foetida L.) contain flavonoid, alkaloid, saponin, steroid dan minyak atsiri. The aim of the experiment was to find out the activity of nhexane fraction, ethyl acetate fraction, water fraction and ethanol extract of kepuh seed (Sterculia foetida L.) as antibacterial against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923. Kepuh seed were extracted by maceration using ethanol 70% solvent and then fractionated using n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and water solvents. The n-hexane fraction, ethyl acetate fraction, water fraction and ethanol extract were tested for its antibacterial activity using dilution method with concentrations of 50%, 25%, 12.5%, 6.25%, 3.12%, 1.56%, 0.78%, 0.39%, 0.19% and 0.09%. The result of the experiment showed that Minimum Bactericide Concentrations of ethanol extract, n-hexane fraction, ethyl acetate fraction and water fraction was 3,12%; 3,12%; 6,25% and 12,5%. The n-hexane fraction had the most effective antibacterial activity compared with ethyl acetate fractions, water fractions and ethanol extract. Chemical constituens contained in the fraction of n-hexane, which is alleged to have antibacterial activity essential oils and steroids.
