Abstract
Memory is the process in which the learning information is stored and can be retrieved. The organ playing important role in memory factor is brain, exactly lobus temporalis. The plant potentially improving memory, in addition to Ginko biloba is pegagan(Centella asiatica, [L] Urban) herb. The plant selected to be combined with pegagan herb is wild ginger (Curcuma xanthorrhiza, Roxb) potentially protects the cell from oxidative damage. The objective of research was to find out whether or not the combination of pegagan herb and wild ginger rhizome extracts in syrup preparation form can improve the memory and have different effect at varying doses. The method used for testing memory, among others, was step through passive avoidance method employing pretest and posttest latency time interval parameter from the length of time the mice needed to enter the dark compartment from bright compartment. The dose used was Ginko biloba (0.195 mg/20 g BW) as positive control, and sucrose solution as negative control, dose 10 ml (1.213 mg/20 g BW)pegagan extract and (1.31 mg/20 g BW) wild ginger extract, dose 15 ml (1.82 mg/20 g BW) pegagan extract and (1.96 mg/20 g BW) wild ginger extract, and dose 20 ml (2.43 mg/20 g BW) pegagan extract and (2.61 mg/20 g BW) wild ginger extract The result of statistic test showed the significant difference of mean latency time between treatments. The dose 15 ml (1.82 mg/20 g BW) pegagan extract and (1.96 mg/20 g BW) wild ginger extract had highest mean latency time during the research: 229.25 s on the day-9, 277.82 s on the day-10, and 290.11 s on the day-11. Therefore, it could be concluded that the combination of macerated pegagan (Centella asiatica, [L] Urban) herb and wild ginger (Curcuma xanthorrhiza, Roxb) rhizome having been made liquid preparation still provided memory improvement effect on the white mice (Mus musculus). Keywords: liquid preparation, memory, pegagan herb wild ginger rhizome.
