Abstract

Chronic kidney failure is a progressive and irreversible disorder of kidney’s function, in which kidneys fail to maintain metabolism and fluid-electrolyte balance, causing uremia. Chronic kidney failure contributes to a decrease in glomerular filtration rate (GFR) which later causes uric acid excretion disorder in kidney distal tubuli, and this leads to uric acid secretion through kidney. Therefore, uric acid is reabsorbed by kidney distal tubuli which triggers an increase in blood uric acid levels. This study aims at investigating an increase in uric acid levels in patients with chronic kidney failure. The uric acid level examination was carried out in the laboratory of Setia Budi University of Surakarta towards 25 serum samples of patients with chronic kidney failure at Dr. Moewardi Regional Public Hospital of Surakarta. The uric acid levels were measured using Uricase-PAP with DCHBS (3,5 dikhloro–2 hydroxybenzene sulfonic acid) and uric acid mono-reagent and standard, and the levels were later measured with Stardust FC photometer. The results of examination on 25 serum samples in patients with chronic kidney failure indicate that 96% samples experience an increase in uric acid levels attributable to a decrease in glomerular filtration rate (GFR) which accompanies chronic kidney failure. Meanwhile, 4% samples do not experience an increase in uric acid levels since the patients take medicines which reduce uric acid levels. Keywords: uric acid, chronic kidney failure.
