Abstract
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disease group with hyperglycemic characteristic due to insulin secretion, insulin dysfunction or both of them. In DM patients, there is excessive increase of fatty acid in the plasma, resulting in increased free fatty acid thereby increasing the total cholesterol level. The objective of research was to find out the difference of total cholesterol level in patients with controlled and uncontrolled type-2 DM. Patients were categorized as controlled type 2 DM when HbA1c < 7,0% and uncontrolled if the levels ≥ 7,0%. HbA1c level was examined using high performance liquid chromatography method, total cholesterol level was examined using cholesterol oxidase para aminophenazone method. This research was an observational analytical research with cross-sectional approach. Primary data obtained undertook normality test using Kolmogorov-smirnov indicating that the data was distributed normally and followed with independent t-test with confidence interval of 95% and significance level < 0.05. The result of research conducted on 60 sample patients with controlled and uncontrolled type-2 DM showed that the mean total cholesterol level of patients with controlled was lower (163.23 mg/dl) than that of patients with uncontrolled type-2 DM (234.80 mg/dl). The result of independent t-test obtained probability of 0.001 < 0.05 therefore it could be found that there was a significant difference of total cholesterol level between patients with controlled and with uncontrolled type2 DM. Further research should be conducted using other methods such as case control approach method or with different population or other variables. Keywords: Diabetes Mellitus, Total Cholesterol, HbA1c.
