Abstract

Smoking is an activity to burn the tobacco and tar leaves and suck the smoke it produces. The smoke carries the danger from a number of tobacco contents and also the danger of burning it produces. In active smokers CO levels in the blood increase. Strong affinity of CO to hemoglobin causes CO is strongly bound by hemoglobin resulting increase of erythropoiesis process as an effort to increase the delivery of oxygen levels to the tissues which may lead increasing hemoglobin levels. The purpose of this examination was to determine whether there is an increase of hemoglobin levels in active smokers. The examination was carried out on 23 active smoker students at Setia Budi University. The research time was conducted on December 29th, 2015 and January 12th, 2016 conducted at Hematology Laboratory of Setia Budi University, Surakarta. Determination of hemoglobin levels by cyanmethemoglobin method. The test results showed that the results of hemoglobin levels above normal value was 17% (4 students), and hemoglobin levels with normal levels was 83% (19 students).
