Abstract
Cape jasmine leaf (Gardenia jasminoides J. Ellis) is a part of cape jasmine that has antioxidant and antidiabetic activity. This study aims to find the antioxidant activity of cape jasmine leaf ethanol extract in vitro and in vivo. The antioxidant activity in cape jasmine leaf ethanol extract was tested by in vitro with DPPH free radical capture methods with IC50 parameter, and compared with quercetin was used as. The antioxidant activity test by in vivo in this study used the method of enzyme glutathione peroxidase activity increase in hyperglycemic rat liver tissue that had been induced with alloxan. The data obtained were statistically analyzed using annova test and continued by post hoc test. The results of antioxidant activity test in vitro showed that the cape jasmine leaf ethanol extract in vitro had IC50 value of 86.411 mg/ml, meaning that it was included as powerful antioxidant. In vivo antioxidant activity test in diabetic rat showed the activity of glutathione peroxidase enzyme at effective dose of 500 mg/kg, here, there was an increase in glutathione peroxidase enzyme activity of 61.74 U/mg on rat and it also had a significant difference with the control group of hyperglycemia (p<0,05).
