Abstract

Indonesia currently belongs to five big countries with the largest number of older population in the world, 18.1 millions or 9.6% out of total population. The increased number of elders is of course followed by the increasing health problems in elders, one of which is menopause. In menopause age, women will loss estrogen hormone protection, among others, resulting in osteoporosis. The objective of research was to find out the difference of serum calcium ion level in menopause and non-menopause women. This study was an analytical observational research with cross-sectional approach and the sampling technique used was purposive sampling one obtaining 30 menopause and 30 non-menopause women as the sample. The primary data obtained was the result of serum calcium ion level examination that was then tested for its normality using Kolmogorov-Smirnov, the result of which indicated that the data was distributed normally, and it was followed with statistic test using Independent Sample t-test at confidence level of 95% and significance level of <0.05. The result of calcium ion level examination in menopause women had the lower mean score of 1.06 ± 0.06 mmol/l, compared with the result of calcium ion level in non-menopause women of 1.15 ± 0.05 mmol/l. The conclusion of research was that from statistic calculation, it could be found that tstatistic value was -6,256 < ttable (1.671) with probability of 0.001 < 0.05 meaning that there was a significant difference of calcium ion level in menopause and non-menopause women. For further research on the difference of serum calcium ion levels between menopause and non-menopause women, the confounding factor should be taken into account, such as blood pH, vitamin D, calcitonin, and calcium intake from diet. Keywords: serum calcium ion, menopause women, non-menopause women.
