Abstract

Helminthic disease is a type of illness since parasites (worms) enter human body. Some of intestinal worms which may cause health problems are Soil Transmitted Helminthes or worms transmitted through soil, including Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura and hookworms. This study aims at investigating the relationship between knowledge, behavior and habit in maintaining hygiene and Soil Transmitted Helminthes infection and finding out the percentage of Soil Transmitted Helminthes in farmers at Karanganyar village, Plupuh sub-district, Sragen. This research applied descriptive-analytical method. Samples used in this research were 30 farmers at Karanganyar village, Plupuh sub-district, Sragen. Fecal examination was carried out to investigate the percentage of Soil Transmitted Helminthes, while questionnaires were used to find out the relationship among knowledge, behavior, and habit in maintaining hygiene. Data were obtained and were later processed using Chi-square statistical test with significance level (α = 0.05). The results indicate that there is a relationship between knowledge, behavior, and habit in maintaining hygiene and intestinal nematoda infection from Soil Transmitted Helminthes group in Farmer at Karanganyar Village, Plupuh Subdistrict, Sragen (p-value< 0.05; p= 0.000; p = 0.005; p = 0.004). The percentage of Soil Transmitted Helminthes infection in farmers at Karanganyar village, Plupuh subdistrict, Sragen shows that 16.7% farmers are infected by Ascaris lumbricoides and 3.3% farmers are infected by hookworm.
