Abstract
Kualin regency is the second most malaria endemic area in Timor Tengah Selatan regency, East Nusa Tenggara, with 1.5% infected suspects (316 of 21,476 people) at Public Health Center (Puskesmas). The high rate of malaria spreading in this area can be attributable to people’s lack of knowledge on malaria, mangrove forest along coast lines and the lack of people’s behavior. This study aims at investigating the influence of people’s knowledge level and behavior on malaria incidence rate and the percentage of malaria incidence at Tuafanu village, Kualin sub-district, Timor Tengah Selatan regency. This study is an observational research with cross-sectional approach. A total of 279 Tuafanu villagers at the age of 15-55 years were selected as samples. The samples were obtained with systematic random sampling technique. Chi square statistical test was applied. The research results indicate an influence of knowledge level and behavior of villagers on malaria incidence rate with the value of chi square count of knowledge level (df=2) with X12 count > X2 table, that is 30.260 > 5.991, and the value of contingency coefficient of 0.313. Meanwhile, the value of chi square count of behavior (df=1) with X12 count > X2 table is 8.570 > 3.8415, with the value of contingency coefficient of 0.173. The percentage of malaria incidence rate at Tuafanu village, Kualin sub-district, Timor Tengah Selatan regency, with a total of 279 respondents is that 13 respondents (4.7%) are positive with malaria and 95.3% are negative. Keywords : Knowledge, people’s behavior, and malaria incidence rate.
