Abstract
Any type of smoking puts a significant effect on health and becomes the main factor triggering atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease. Nicotine is one of elements contained in cigarettes, which stimulates the release of catecholamine, the increase of lipolysis, and the increase of free fatty acid, and this condition later increases triglyceride, total cholesterol, Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL), and Very Low Density Lipoprotein (VLDL) levels, and reduces High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol levels. LDL is the type of lipoprotein which transports the most LDL cholesterols in active and passive smokers. This research is a comparative-analytical study with cross-sectional design. A total of 62 persons were selected as samples based on criteria and willingness to become respondents. LDL cholesterol levels were examined using Direct Low Density Lipoprotein (DLDL) method. The data were analyzed using SPSS 18 version with Shapiro-Wilk test to investigate the data normality with significance level of p > 0.05 and with parametrical independent sample t-test with the significance level of p < 0.05. The research results demonstrate that the average ± SB of LDL cholesterol level in active smokers is 119.80 ± 27.09 mg/dl and the average ± SB of LDL cholesterol level in passive smokers is 102.94 ± 23.64 mg/dl. The analysis results on independent sample t-test indicate the value of tcount of 2.612 > ttable (2.000) and p-value of 0.011 < 0.05. In conclusion, there is significant difference of LDL cholesterol levels between active smokers and passive smokers, where LDL cholesterol levels in active smokers is higher than passive smokers.
