Abstract

Glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) is a small Hb component that is stable and formed slowly through non-enzymatic reaction of Hb and glucose. The examination of HbA1c has a drawback, only contributing 50%, 40%, and 10% to HbA1c final results. In reference to journal of Nepal association research for medical laboratory, HbA1c is highly important to suppress blood glucose level, and HbA1c together with Estimated Average Glucose (eAG) can also be used for diagnostic examination of DM and for better understanding in maintain strict glycemic control. Therefore, this study aims at observing the comparison of direct HbA1c and HbA1c using Estimated Average Glucose (eAG) calculation in patients with type 2 DM at Regional Public Hospital of Surakarta. This research was carried out by processing the data of fasting blood glucose, post pandrial 2 hours blood glucose and HbA1c examination results in patients with type 2 DM at clinical pathology of Laboratory Information System of Dr. Moewardi Regional Public Hospital of Surakarta using apparent method. The results of data analysis using paired sample t-test demonstrate that the significance level is 0.609 > 0.05. In conclusion, direct HbA1c and HbA1c, measured using eAG calculation, are the same. In other words, there is no significant difference between both of them; and therefore, eAG calculation can be used to replace direct HbA1c at Public Health Center, medical clinic, and other health service providers.
