Abstract

Bitter melon (Momordica charantia Linn.) is a plant that has a property as a traditional medicine. Chemical content of bitter melon is flavonoids, saponins, tannins, and terpenoids. This study was conducted to determine the antibacterial activity of fraction of n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and water from ethanol extract of bitter melon and know MIC MBC from the most active fraction of Shigella dysenteriae ATCC 9361. Extraction of bitter melon is done by maseration method using ethanol 70% solvent, then fractionated using n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and water solvent. The results of extraction and fractionation were tested for antibacterial activity of Shigella dysenteriae ATCC 9361 using diffusion and dilution method. The diffusion method for knowing minimum inhibitory concentration and the most active fraction of Shigella dysenteriae ATCC 9361 with concentration 50%; 25% and 12.5%. Dilution method for know minimum bactericidal concentration of active fraction with concentration dilution series; 50%; 25%; 12.5%; 6.25%; 3.125%; 1.562%; 0.781%; and 0.391%. Statistical analysis using ANOVA oneway to determine whether there is significant difference between the test preparation. The results showed that the extract of ethanol bitter melon has activity againts Shigella dysenteriae ATCC 9361 and water fraction has the most active inhibition power compared to n-hexane and ethyl acetate fraction that is 50% concentration to Shigella dysenteriae ATCC 9361 with 17,67 mm inhibitory.
