Abstract

Guava leaf (Psidium guajava L.) and garlic (Allium sativum L.) contain flavonoid, tannins, alkaloids, saponins, and allicin that are thought to have antibacterial activity. In the previous research, ethanol extract of guava leaf and garlic respectively efficacious as antibacterial Escherichia coli ATCC 25992. The combination of both is expected to improve the efficiency and effectiveness in inhibiting the growth of Escherichia coli bacteria. This study aims to determine the antibacterial activity of ethanol extract of guava leaf and garlic to the growth of Escherichia coli ATCC 25992 bacteria. The extraction of guava leaf and garlic using macerasion method with 96% ethanol. The testing of antibacterial activity used was difusion method and dilusion method with single extract sample of guava leaf, single extract garlic, and combination of 1:1, 1:3, 3:1 extract. In the diffusion results showed a 1: 1 result which has the most effective activity with a diameter of the inhibitory area (DDH) of 22.87 mm. The concentration of extract used ranging from 50%; 25%; 12,5%; 6,25%; 3,12%; 1,56%; 0,78%; 0,39%; 0,19%; 0,09%. The minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) most effective combination of guava leaf and garlic extract is a 1:1 combination of 12,5%. The diffusion results showed a 1: 1 result which has the most effective activity with a diameter of the inhibitory area (DDH) of 22.87 mm.
