Abstract

The peels of red dragon fruit (Hylocereus costaricensis) contains antocyanin, flavonoid, saponin and polyphenol compound that has been used as antioxidant. Red dragon fruit extract was formulated with combination mannitol and sodium starch glycolate. The aim of this research was to find out the influence of mannitol and sodium strach glycolate on physical properties of lozenges formulation of red dragon fruit extract and its antioxidant activity. Peels of red dragon fruit (Hylocereus costaricensis) was obtained using maceration method with ethanol 70% as solvent. Lozenges formulation consisted of five formula with combination proportion of mannitol : sodium starch glycolate i.e. F1 (40% : 0%), F2 (38% : 2%), F3 (36% : 4%), F4 (34% : 6%) and F5 (32% : 8%). Lozenges was prepared from peels of red dragon fruit (Hylocereus costaricensis) spissum extract. Dry granulation method was applied to tablet formulations. Physical properties of tablet and its antioxidant activity using DPPH method were conducted. The results showed that an increase of mannitol increased flow rate of granules, friability and reduce the hardness. Increase of sodium starch glycolate increased the hardness and reduce the friability and dissolving time. An increase of mannitol increased sweet taste on lozenges and more preferable. All formulations of lozenges have antioxidant activity. Extract and lozenge formula classified into weak antioxidant for inhibited DPPH free radical.
