Abstract
In the pathological state such as diabetes mellitus (DM), increased oxidative stress in the body will cause decrease in endogenous antioxidant activity in the body so that the body do not able to detoxify free radical and prevent cell damage. One source of natural antioxidant as antidiabetic is juwet cortex (Syzygium cumini). The purpose of this study was to determine anti hyperglycemic activity of Ethyl acetate fraction juwet cortex and it’s antioxidant activity of SOD, GPx and decrease in MDA and determine the pancreas protective ability and correlation between anti hyperglicemic, antioxidant and pancreas regeneration of Ethyl acetate fraction juwet cortex. This study was an laboratory experimental research using a post test only group design. The subjects of this study were 30 male twenty five rats ware conditioned type 2 diabetes by alloxan induction (150 mg/kg i.p). Rats were grouped into 6 groups: group I normal (without induction aloksan ), group II negative control (Na-cmc 1 % ), group III positive control glibenclamide 0,45 mg/kg bw, group IV juwet cortex dose of 25 mg/kg bw, group V juwet cortex dose of 50 mg/kg bw and group VI juwet cortex dose of 100 mg/kg bw. Then conducted test of SOD, GPx, MDA activities, parameters and histopathological abservative at pancreatic cells. The results showed that ethyl acetate fraction juwet cortex at dose of 25, 50 and 100 mg/kg bw could decreased blood glucose levels of rats and MDA and increased the activity of SOD and GPx. The ethyl acetate fraction of juwet cortex dose of 25, 50 and 100 mg/kg bw could regenerate pancreatic cell damage induced alloxan. The most effective dose in decreased blood glucose levels and MDA and increased the activity of SOD and GPx was dose of 100 mg/kg bw. Dose of 100 mg/kg bw was also the most effective in regenerating pancreatic cells in this study. Keywords: Syzgium cumini (L), antihiperglicemic, antioxidant
