Abstract

Methyl salicylate is one of the topical analgetics drug. Methyl salicylate can be formulated in cream with the addition of excipients and additives. One of the additive materials that have important roles is cetyl alcohol as a gelling agent. The aim of the study was to determine the physical quality and stability of methyl salicylate cream made in various cetyl alcohol concentrations. The study was carried out by making three formulas of methyl salicylate cream with cetyl alcohol concentration of 2%, 2.5% and 3%. The obtained creams were tested for organoleptic, homogeneity, pH, dispersive power, viscosity, and adhesion power. The data were statistically analyzed using one way ANOVA method, to determine the significance level of formula I, II, and III. The study results showed that methyl salicylate could be made cream with variation of cetyl alcohol concentration as gelling agent that met the tests of physical quality and cream stability. The three cream formulas had good physical quality including organoleptic, homogeneity, pH, dispersive power, viscosity, and adhesion, and good cream stability because they were met the requirements of physical quality and cream stability.
