Abstract
red betel leaf is a plant that has been known to have antibacterial activity both in scientific and empirical. This study was aimed to find out the influence of red betel leaf extract various concentrations against antibacterial activity of Streptococcus mutans in mouthwash preparation and physical stability of the preparation. The red betel leaf extract was obtained with maseration method using aethanol 70%. Mouthwash preparation made in the 3 formulas with different extract concentration of 5%, 10%, 15%. Antibacterial activity test using dilution method and physical stability test include physical form, homogeneity, pH, purity and viscosity. The result showed red betel leaf extract had antibacterial activity againts Streptococcus mutans with minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) was 6,25%, meanwhile MBC of 1st formula was 13,5%, 2nd and 3rd formula were 6,25%. Preparation stability of mouthwash seen from physical form the parameters and purity stable but seen from the parameters of viscosity and unstable pH. So it was concluded that mouthwash preparation was not stable. Keywords: red betel leaf extract, mouthwash, physical stability test, antibacterial activity test, dilution.
