Abstract

Thalassemia is one of the genetic diseases which caused by a gene mutation on Chromosome 16 that has functioned on hemoglobin synthesize so that it caused severe anemia. Thalassemia is suffered by approximately 200 million people over the world, one of which is β Thalassemia that is suffered by 10 - 15% people in Mediterranean Southeast Asia. Continuous transfusion is carried out as the main treatment for thalassemia patients to prevent severe anemia, but in the long term can cause liver damage. The aim of this study is to determine the correlation between serum ferritin levels and transaminase enzymes in beta major thalassemia patients. The methodology used in this study is analytic observational using a crosssectional approach. This study used 97 subjects with inclusion criteria aged 2-18 years who did therapy between May 2017 - May 2018 at Dr. Moewardi in Surakarta. Data of patients who met the inclusion criteria were tested for Pearson's correlation, p was significant if < 0,05. The results of the study show that the mean ± SD age, ferritin serum, SGOT, and SGPT data with p > 0,05. Correlation test between serum ferritin levels with SGOT and SGPT (r = 0,400, p = 0,001 and r = 0,462, p = 0,001). There is a positive, moderate, and significant correlation between serum ferritin levels and transaminase enzymes in beta-thalassemia patients. Keywords: β-Thalassemia major, Ferritin serum, SGOT (Serum glutamate oxaloacetic transaminase), SGPT (Serum glutamate pyruvic transaminase).
