Abstract

Ginger is one of the traditional crops are efficacious as a tonic. There are 3 varieties of ginger: red ginger (Zingeber officinale var. Rubrum), big yellow ginger (Zingiber officinale var. Officinarum), small yellow ginger (Zingeber officinale var. Amarum). This study aims to determine the tonic effect of each ginger rhizome. In this study each ginger rhizome was prepared into syrup. The tested animals were white male mices that were arraged into treatment groups. Each treatment group consisted of 5 mices. The first group as a negative control at 0,5 ml/20 g BW mice of dose. Group II was treated with caffein positive control at 0,5 ml/20 g BW mice of dose. Group III was treated with red ginger at 6,24 mg/20 g BW mice of dose. Group IV was treated with big ginger at 6,24 mg/20 g BW mice of dose. Group V was treated with small ginger at 6,24 mg/20 g BW mice of dose. The tested animals were placed into the water tank and were observed for the sign of fatigue which showed no movement of their four legs, the stiffened tail, the head being under water surface for 7 seconds. Once the sign of fatigue showed the tested animals were moved from the water tank and were noted for the time exhaustion. The results showed that the preparation of the three types of syrup ginger rhizome has a tonic effect. The highest tonic effect was from red ginger rhizome (Zingiber officinale var. Rubrum), the lower effect was big ginger rhizome (Zingiber officinale var. Officinarum), and the lowest effect was small ginger rhizome (Zingiber officinale var. Amarum).
