Abstract

Celery seed (Apium graveolens L.) powdered and extracted by 96% ethanol for analysed the activity of anti-hyperglycemic, antioxidant enzymes (SOD, GPx and MDA) and the ability of pancreas regeneration in alloxan-induced rats. This study was an laboratory experimental research using a post-test only group design. The subjects of this study were 25 male Wistar rats which conditioned type 2 diabetes by alloxan induction. Rats were grouped into 5 groups: group I normal, group II negative control alloxan, group III positive control glibenclamide 0,45 mg/kg bw, group IV dose 1 of ethanol extract of celery seed dose 125 mg/kg bw and group V dose 2 of ethanol extract of celery seed dose 250 mg/kg bw. The results showed that ethanol extract of celery seed dose of 125 and 250 mg/kg bw could decreased blood glucose levels of rats and MDA and increased the activity of SOD and GPx but still less than optimal. The ethanol extract of celery seed doses of 125 and 250 mg/kg bw could regenerate pancreatic cell damage induced alloxan. The most effective dose in decreased blood glucose levels and MDA and increased the activity of SOD and GPx was dose of 250 mg/kg bw. Dose of 250 mg/kg bw was also the most effective in regenerating pancreatic cells in this study. Keywords: Apium graveolens L., anti-hyperglycemic, antioxidan
