Abstract
Gourd is a plant used widely by Indonesian people. This study aimed to find out the effect of gourd seed ethanol extract in lowering blood glucose level. This study employed aloxane induction method in which the rats were divided into five treatment groups, each of which consisted of five rats. Group I served as negative control (CMC 0.5%), group II as positive control (glibenclamide) at dose 0.09 mg/200 g rat BW, groups III, IV, and V were given gourd seed ethanol extract at doses 20 mg/200 g rat BW, 40 mg/200 g rat BW, and 80 mg/200 g rat BW, respectively. With the assumption that the presence of flavonoid and saponin compounds could lower blood glucose level, in the blood glucose measurement at doses (20 mg/200 g rat BW, 40 mg/200 g rat BW, and 80 mg/200 g rat BW) it could be found the decrease blood glucose level after the provision of a solution test on the day-4 (110.8 mg/dl, 114.0 mg/dl, and 109.6 mg/dl) while on the day-8 (98.8 mg/dl, 100.8 mg/dl, and 91.2 mg/dl), that was not different significantly from positive control.
