Abstract

Diabetic is a disease characterized with increased blood glucose levels over 250 mg/dl. Long-term treatment for diabetic can cause many side effects so that it is required a safer and low cost alternative treatment. Pletekan (Ruellia tuberosa Linn) is one of herbs that commonly used as an alternatif for antidiabetic drug in reducing blood glucose levels. This study was conducted with a random design using white male rats. The rats were divided into 5 groups each of them contains 5 rats. Group I : negative control, Group II : metformin group, Group III : Pletekan extract group, Group IV : a combination of metformin and pletekan extract (0.5 : 0.5), Group V : a combination of metformin and pletekan extract (1 : 1). These data were analyzed by using Kruskal-Wallis test and followed by Mann-Whitney test. The average of blood glucose level for negative control (178,8 ± 44.76 mg/dl); single dose metformin (83.8 ± 4.26 mg/dl); single dose etanol extract of pletekan (89.4 ± 2.00 mg/dl); a combination (0.5 : 0.5) etanol extract of pletekan and metformin (98.6 ± 3.36 mg/dl); a combination (1 : 1) etanol extract of pletekan and metformin (80.0 ± 4.94 mg/dl).
