Abstract

Plantain flowers (Musa paradisiaca L.) contains several compounds are efficacious in the treatment of such flavonoids, tanins, and saponins. This study aimed to examine the effects of subchronic toxicity and determine subchronic toxicity of ethanol extract of plantain flowers to changes in ALT and AST levels and histopathological picture of the liver of male rats. The extraction method used was macerated with 70% ethanol. This study used test animals wistar strain male rats by 20 tails are divided into 5 groups: the first dose (25 mg/bw), the second dose (50 mg/bw), the third dose (100 mg/bw), the fourth dose (500 mg/bw) and the fifth dose (aqua destilata) for 1 month. Data were obtained every week and histopathological picture of the liver at the end of 4th week. Data ALT and AST test results were analyzed using paired sample t-test and One Way Annova, for histopathological outcome data were analyzed using One Way Annova. The results showed that the ethanol extract of plantain flower orally for 1 month did not give a toxic effect on the liver white male rats were seen from the results of ALT and AST levels and histopathological parameters were observed. Keywords: toxicity, plantain flowers, ALT and AST levels and histopathology.
