Abstract

Doxorubicin is a chemotherapy agent that can inhibit the growth of T47D cells but is cytotoxic to Vero cells and inhibit lymphocyte proliferation. The use of doxorubicin combination with other agents may increase the effects and reduce side effects. The use of doxorubicin can be combined with herbal therapy. One of herbal therapies used to fight cancer is Myrmecodia tuberosa. This study aimed to examine the cytotoxic effects Myrmecodia tuberosa against T47D and lymphocyte proliferation as well as the effect of the combination ofMyrmecodia tuberosaand doxorubicin against T47D cells and Vero cells. The method used in this research is the MTT assay. This method is based on the change of tetrazolium salt into formazan in active mitochondria in viable cells. Test analysis performed by one-way ANOVA post hoc Tukey test and the Bonferroni test. The results showed ethyl acetate fraction of ethanol extract of Myrmecodia tuberosa (FEE) are cytotoxic against T47D cells and increase proliferation of lymphocytes. In the combination test, the FEE increase the cytotoxic effects of doxorubicin on T47D cells, the FEE also reduce the cytotoxic effects of doxorubicin on Vero cells.
