Abstract
Hyperglycemia in diabetes mellitus (DM) triggered Reative Oxygen Species (ROS) which would disrupt the balance of the antioxidant defense system and will lead to oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is responsible for damage to organs including the pancreas. Antioxidants play an important role in protecting the body organs from damage caused by oxidative stress . Plant coriander (Coriandrum sativum L.) is widely used by the public as a traditional medicine . This study aims to determine the antihyperglycemic activity and the ability to reduce oxidative stress ethanol extract of coriander seeds in rats induced by alloxan. Research carried out by using 30 male Wistar rats induced by alloxan single dose of 150 mg/kg bw intraperitoneally. Divided into five groups, each of 6 animals. Group I: normal control, group II: negative control, Group III: positive control using glibenclamide 0.1 mg / kg bw, group IV and V is the group treated with the ethanol extract of seeds coriander dose of 125 mg / kg bw and 250 mg / kg bw. Treatment was given for 28 days. The effects of hypoglycemia, antioxidants and pancreatic regeneration was evaluated by using the parameters of blood glucose levels, antioxidant status of superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), Malondehide levels (MDA) in the liver and the histopathology of the pancreas. xvi The results showed that the ethanol extract of coriander seeds was significantly (p <0.05) were able to lower blood glucose levels; increases levels of SOD and GPx, as well as lower levels of MDA in the liver of rats; also able to regenerate Langerhans islets of the pancreatic rats induced alloxan. Key words: Corriander (Corriandrum sativum L.), Oxidative stress, antioxidant, diabetes mellitus
