Abstract
Methyl salicylate is one of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) that are useful for relieving muscle aches and joint pains due to muscle tension, sprain, or inflammation. Methyl salicylate in the form of oil, pale yellow and aromatic odor that has hydrophobic or insoluble in water. Methyl salicylate works by diverting the pain that arises with a warm sensation of the skin due to irritation and dilation of blood vessels. In this study semi-solid dosage forms selected for delivering methyl salicylate via a topical route are emulgel. Gelling agent used is carbopol 940 and propylenglycol as humectant or wetting agent. This study is a type of experimental study involving variations of carbopoly 940 concentrations of 2%, 3%, and 4% and propylenglycols 15%, 14%, and 13% for the preparation of 50 g of emulsulated preparations. Physical properties and stability evaluated in the form of organoleptic test, pH, viscosity, dispersion, and adhesiveness. Analysis of the results showed that emulgel formed white, typical methyl odor and also homogeneous, type emulsion M/A and pH value 5. The results showed that variations in carbopol concentration 940 and propylenglycol affected the physical properties and stability of the preparation during storage. Emulgel preparations that meet the criteria of a good semi-solid preparation are the emulsions with carbopol 940 and propylene glycol concentrations of 3% and 14%.
