Abstract

Diabetic is a disease characterized with increased blood glucose levels over 200 mg/dl. Long-term treatment for diabetic can cause many side effects so that it is required a safer and low cost alternative treatment. Karanda (Carissa carandas Linn) is one of herbs that commonly used as an alternatif for antidiabetic drug in reducing blood glucose levels. This study was conducted with a random design using white male rats. The rats were divided into 6 groups each of them contains 5 rats. Group I : negative control (CMC 0,5%), Group II : metformin group (9 mg), Group III : Karanda extract group (80 mg), Group IV : a combination of karanda extract and metformin (75% : 25%) (60 mg : 2,25 mg), Group V : a combination of karanda extract and metformin (50% : 50%) (40 mg : 4,5 mg), Group V : a combination of karanda extract and metformin (25% : 75%) (20 mg : 6,75 mg). These data were analyzed by using uji Kolmogorov-Smirnov and one way ANOVA. The average of blood glucose level for negative control (259 ± 16,61 mg/dl); single dose metformin (88 ± 14,26 mg/dl); single dose etanol extract of karanda (115 ± 7,79 mg/dl); a combination (75% : 25%) etanol extract of karanda and metformin (101 ± 7,09 mg/dl); a combination (50% : 50%) etanol extract of karanda and metformin (104,4 ± 15,30 mg/dl); a combination (25% : 75%) etanol extract of karanda and metformin (103 ± 6,98 mg/dl). From the result of statistical test combination (50% : 50%) ( 40 mg : 4,5 mg) of the most effectively reduce blood glucose levels. Keywords : Carissa carandas Linn, metformin, alloxan, antidiabetic
