Abstract

Disintegrant is a substance that is added to tablets, to make the tablets disintegrate when in contact with an aqueous environment. Starch is one of disintegrants that are widely use in tablet manufacturing process. Breadfruit is an abundant producer of starch in topical Indonesia. This study was aimed to find out the ability of pregelatinized breadfruit starch as disintegrant on the physical propertis and dissolution profile of direct compressed ibuprofen tablets. Ibuprofen tablets used 4 formulations i.e. Tablet with pregelatinized breadfruit as disintegrant with 20% conten (Formula 2); 30% (Formula 3); and 40 % (Formula 4), and Avicel PH 102 as control. The tablets were made by direct compressed method. The obtained tablets were tested for its physical properties including weight unifromity, uniformity of size, hardness, friability, disintegration time, and dissolution test. The data was tested theoretically according to the applicable parameters and statistically by one way ANOVA, and if there was significant difference continued by Scheffe test at 95% confidence. The result showed that pregelatinized breadfruit starch could be use as disintegrant of ibuprofen tablets with appropitae content. Physical properties test showed that it had a high value of hardness, relatively small friability, and relatively faster disintegration time. Q30 at the dissolution profile showed that the use of pregelatinized breadfruit starch met the qualification of Indonesian Pharmacopoeia 4th edition, that was at minute 30 the dissolved active substance not be less than 70%.
